A real before-and-after, and why a floppy or snapped handle usually means more than just the handle.
The before-and-after above is a real job: a composite front door whose lever handle had snapped. It's one of the most common calls on the Fylde Coast, because uPVC and composite doors all use the same basic parts: a handle, a spindle, a multipoint gearbox and a euro cylinder.
A handle that goes floppy, or one you have to lift hard to lock, is usually telling you the gearbox or multipoint mechanism is wearing out. Replacing the handle alone can fix a snapped lever, but if the mechanism is failing it's better to change it before it jams with the door locked.
While the door's being worked on, it's worth checking the cylinder. Standard euro cylinders can be snapped by burglars in seconds; an anti-snap cylinder rated TS 007 3-star or SS312 Diamond is a cheap upgrade that insurers increasingly expect.
Usually the spring in the handle or the gearbox inside the door has worn. The handle can often be replaced on its own, but if the door is hard to lock, the multipoint mechanism may need changing too.
